Augsburg adopts new 2026Plus local transport plan
With the adoption of the Augsburg 2026Plus Local Transport Plan, a new binding framework for the further development of public transport in the city and region of Augsburg has been in place since 1 January 2026. Together with our partners nbsw and Spiekermann, we developed a comprehensive concept in close consultation with the Augsburg Transport Association (AVV). Our focus was particularly on evaluating future service and measure concepts through a transport modelling-based analysis.
The Augsburg region is set to experience population growth and significantly more complex commuter traffic in the future. New residential and commercial areas will also increase demand for mobility in the region and require an efficient and attractive public transport service. The local transport plan was therefore based on extensive data and planning analyses, as well as reliable forecasts of future mobility demand. The aim was to develop a viable and forward-looking strategy that would strengthen public transport in the city and its surrounding areas in a sustainable manner.
At the heart of the concept lies Augsburg’s urban transport system, which is being further developed through the expansion of the tram network and the construction of several tangential links. At the same time, the aim is to reduce overlapping services between regional and city buses, prioritise intermodal hubs, and have on-demand services act as feeder services to regular scheduled services.
Through our work on the transport model, we were able to help provide a sound assessment of the proposed measures and clearly demonstrate their impact on the city. Together with nbsw, this has resulted in a coherent concept designed to strengthen public transport in Augsburg and the wider region in the long term. We hope that this will encourage as many people as possible to switch to buses and trains, and that the local mobility transition will continue to gain momentum.
