New tram line in Würzburg

02. November 2026

The Hubland Line is a planned tram line intended to connect the Würzburg districts of Hubland and Frauenland, as well as the Old Town, to the existing tram network. The route begins at Barbarossaplatz, where it connects to the existing branch lines: the branch to the main railway station via Kaiserstraße and the branch to the western part of the city via Juliuspromenade.

The route, which is approximately 5.5 km long, will run via Theaterstraße, past the Würzburg Residenz, several schools and the Julius Maximilian University, all the way to the new Hubland district. A total of 12 accessible stops will be built along the route.

The project involves more than just the expansion of transport infrastructure: in particular, the transport spaces in the city centre are being redesigned in line with urban planning principles and, in some cases, converted to reduce traffic. This will enhance the quality of Würzburg’s city centre. In addition, accompanying measures are intended to close gaps in Würzburg’s cycle path network. Particularly in the vicinity of the Würzburg Residence, a World Heritage Site, the design requires special urban planning and architectural sensitivity.
